American Poker Awards Announces New Categories
Six new categories for the upcoming American Poker Awards have been announced by ceremony sponsors, PokerStars and the Global Poker Index.
Among the new categories to be revealed for 2017 are “Event of the Year,” which will be given to the top single tournament of the year. There are also a couple of new awards in the poker entertainment area – “Twitch Streamer of the Year” as well as “Podcast of the Year.” To determine the winners, an American Poker Awards Nomination Panel receives a shortlist of nominees and whittles down the list to four finalists. A “select” Jury will then determine winners from the list of four finalists on the day of the event.
The Global Poker Index has already determined three award winners which performed the best during 2016: GPI Player of the Year (David Peters), GPI Female Player of the Year (Cate Hall) and WSOP Player of the Year (Jason Mercier). There will be a total of 18 awards given out this year.
The awards ceremony will be held on February 23rd at the Sofitel in Beverly Hills with over 150 guests expected to attend.

– With less than a week remaining, things continue to look bleak for the for the four poker professionals in the Brains vs. Artificial Intelligence match at the Rivers Casino. With the action nearly complete for on Tuesday, the Brains are down over $700,000 with Jimmy Chou (down $184,480), Jason Les ($335,805) and Daniel McCaulay ($222,642) all losing by over six figures. Only Dong Kim is currently on the plus side, edging Libratus by $41,000.

– Alex Weldon and Andrew Barber put poker aside to discuss the light-hearted subject of a the probabilities of a nuclear bomb going off in the next four years.
– In addition to being one of the world’s best poker players, Daniel Negreau doesn’t hesitate to share his knowledge with other players, including giving private lessons. Negreanu recently gave some insight to what his private lessons look like via Instagram (h/t f5poker).
– Australians are fighting to keep online poker in their country through the grassroots. Earlier this month, 888 announced they were leaving the market. There are also indications PokerStars and others will follow once updates are finalized to Australia’s gambling laws. The Australian Online Poker alliance is banding to together to fight for the game by agreeing with the spirit of the law changes (problem gambling) while fighting the language of the changes. – In other Australia poker news, the Aussie Millions is entering its last final days. The $100,000 Challenge final table has been set with Steffen Sontheimer as chip leader and Fedor Holz and Sam Trickett also qualifying for the final table. They will reconvene on Saturday. Meanwhile, the first three flights of the Aussie Millions Main Event Day 1 were completed with a total of 718 players entered as the tournament heads into Day 2. Players can buy-in through the first level of Day 2 of the $10,000 buy-in Main Event.
